HANNAH’s Debut is 100% Sweet

5/5

With hypnotic vocals, sleek lyricism, and first-class production, Melbourne singer-songwriter HANNAH has made her debut with her new single ‘Sweet and Sour.’

Lucky enough to have been planning the release prior to the global crisis, the singer dropped the single and accompanying music video today, making a powerful first impression on the Melbourne music scene. The track depicts themes of control in a relationship, turning love from ‘sweet to sour.’

Tell me all of your thoughts

Cause I don’t have a damn clue

You could be happy as hell

Or stumbling out of the blues

Reminiscent of Sabrina Claudio or Jorja Smith, ‘Sweet and Sour’ is a sultry blend of pop and RnB, complete with thoughtful, complex lyrics, and detail focused production and instrumentation. The layers of vocal harmonies building throughout the song give the track depth without overwhelming the competing elements – and with a rich, unaffected vocal tone like HANNAH’s, there can never be too many vocal tracks.

The groove of the song is locked in while somehow retaining a relaxed feel, completely avoiding any sense of quantised rigidity. Producer Julian Steel has fine-tuned this track to absolute perfection, balancing the packed peaks of the chorus with the comparative simplicity of the verses, creating a continually captivating, mesmerising track.

Don’t blame me you took the power
Turned us from so sweet to sour

HANNAH radiates authenticity and innate talent, so it’s no surprise that she’s working her way up the ranks of the Melbourne music scene at speed. Supporting acts such as WLSN, Will Clift, and Jordie Race-Coldrey, she was also selected to participate in the 2019 Nando’s Music Exchange in London, where she received mentorship from artists such as Nadia Rose and Kwame.

‘Sweet and Sour’ is an unquestionable success, memorable and powerful it’s hard to imagine a better introduction for a new artist. With hints of an EP to follow, HANNAH has already left her audience hungry for more.
