Alex Carpi: The One To Watch

5/5

In early 2019 a new artist named Alex Carpi appeared in the Melbourne music scene.  With one single behind her and starting on the ground floor of a notoriously overcrowded industry, Carpi hit the ground running, and hasn’t stopped since.

Following her debut single, ‘I Don’t Wanna Love You Anymore,’ came 2019’s addictively dark hit ‘Veins.’ Making fantastic use of empty space in the song, Carpi had listeners humming the hook long after they finished listening. On the heels of ‘Veins’ came an eighties vibing pop tune, ‘Big City,’ quickly followed by the acoustic releases of tear jerkers ‘Hurricane Heart’ and ‘Wide Open Spaces.’ Carpi has announced to the music world that she’s here, and she’s serious.

Her latest release ‘I Think I’m in the Wrong Room’ is as reliably strong, punchy, and cohesive as we’ve come to expect from Alex. The synth-pop inspired track explores the all too common experience of feeling out of place, and wanting change in life without necessarily knowing how, or having the resources to make that change happen. The lyrics are direct and honest, allowing the listener to understand and feel the song without having to think too hard.

They say surround yourself with who you want to be

Easier said than done in my reality

But I feel like it’s never enough

I can’t escape what I can’t touch

I got so much to prove and I am ready

As always, Carpi’s music is inherently in touch with the experience of her listeners, and her delivery of personal yet universal truths is carefully curated to create the sense of connection and validation that is so vital to the music of singer songwriters.

“I think a lot of people feel this way, including me, and it’s important to know that you’re not alone and many of us are trying to push ourselves forward and better ourselves in some way.”

‘I Think I’m in the Wrong Room’ veers away from expected tropes and production elements of current popular music, instead making it clear that Carpi is focussed on serving the song itself, not the market it falls into. What this creates is timeless music that will remain relevant and withstand the tests of time, where other popular music might make a splash before forever sinking under. With gorgeously raw opening synth chords, eighties inspired drums, and alt rock guitars, Carpi is creating a signature style that, paired with her powerful vocals and emotive delivery, is becoming immediately recognizable as her own. With such an uncommonly rich, full throated voice as Alex has, the only thing the track could possibly be left wanting is more vocals. ‘I Think I’m in the Wrong Room’ is full of beautiful moments that could have been even better served with a deeper exploration of harmonies and vocal layers.

As the second single release, ‘I Think I’m in the Wrong Room’ has set the tone beautifully for Alex’s debut EP ‘Superfamous’ (set for release April 3rd), and continued to prove to the Melbourne music scene, she’s here to stay.
